Many companies sell the same basic post hole digger gearbox and frame. The difference is in which auger comes with it. Most augers will fit most gearboxes - but not all. There are also adapters and extentions. First make sure on smaller tractors that you have enough 3pt rotation to pick the post hole digger clear of the ground. And check the sliding two-piece PTO shaft to make sure it does not bottom out. Augers vary radically in price. I use one about 10 inches in diameter for fence posts and one 20" or so for planting small trees. Go slow at low RPM when starting or drilling a hole. Go down in 6" increments - not all at once. Augers are priced by the size, flute configuration, and digging points. The cheapest are completely adequate for dirt or dirt with some small rocks, have 2 flutes plus a hardened screw tip, and are in the $100 range. The best are used when you will encounter big rocks or hardened claystone and those augers will have some of the following: a flexible finger (replaceable) in the center portion of the quick-change digging tip - ....there can be bolt-on teeth mounted to the sides of that digging tip. The bottom edge of the flutes will have from 2 to 6 teeth bolted to their edges - and these teeth are also replaceable. The center pipe is large and thick steel; the flights are extra thick thick, and can be multiple pitch - although the reason for that feature is lost on me. An 18" (big) auger with all of these features will cost about $500 by itself, and be heavy enough that it wants two men to lift it into a pickup truck. ....

And just to give you an idea of how expensive they can get, the one for my Bobcat cost about $2100 with a single 9" bit. But not much slows it down and you can feel the ground move when it hits a rock and drives it into the wall. ....

Yep, most Bobcat is different stuff entirely. Industrial quality, and hydraulic drive rather than PTO. ....
